MBD Standard Construction Specs and Materials
Below are links to our standard construction Specs and Materials and how they relate to our green building principles. *Please keep in mind that this section is still under construction, and will be updated frequently*
CertainTeed Building Supplies: CertainTeed is building responsibly through the development of sustainable building products and systems. Certainteed offers many different green building products; everything from roofing to gypsum. Their proprietary patented formula contains more than 30% pre-consumer recycled material – fly ash, diverting over 50,000 tons from landfills each year and their manufacturing facilities recycle used water, saving more than 1.5 billion gallons a year. CertainTeed was also the 2009 Energy Star Partner of the Year. HVAC: From the earliest cast-iron radiators to the first built-in bathtub, the American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brand has been synonymous with homes and home comfort. They are committed to providing you and your family with outstanding service and quality products. With their propane heating systems that are over 95% efficient, they're putting regular furnaces to shame. Correct Deck Composite 5/4" Decking: Correct Deck has developed products that are viable alternatives to tropical hardwood decking material. Additionally, all of their products are PVC and vinyl free. PVC is not a bad material per se, but it presents life-cycle problems in the existing recycling environment. This link shows Correct Deck's commitment to Green Building. Cedar Products: One third of the energy used in North America is used to heat, cool and operate the buildings we live and work in. As most energy is produced from non-renewable fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases, reducing energy use in a building will lower its environmental impact. One way to accomplish this is using cedar siding to create an insulation envelope to your home that will reduce energy in your home. Bamboo Flooring: Bamboo is inexpensive, available in a variety of styles and is a renewable resource. Bamboo flooring is similar in appearance to hardwood but is even more durable in terms of scuffing, wear and expansion. Bamboo is harvested in plantations that take only 3-6 years to reach maturity. Although still not widely used, it is perhaps the most efficient material for flooring. PET Carpet: PET carpet is manufactured with yarn created from reclaimed polyester resins of two-liter soda bottles and ketchup containers. Commonly known as Pop Bottle Carpet, recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) polyester carpet is uniquely strong and durable. The quality of the polyester resins remain unchanged throughout the recycling process. In general, the carpets tend to be heavier, thicker and more luxurious than conventional nylon carpets. Benjamin Moore Zero VOC Paint: Benjamin Moore has found innovative ways to make coatings that are compliant even within the most stringent regulatory requirements. A wide selection of products already meet new VOC guidelines for industrial and architectural applications, and offer a variety of products that meet and qualify for Green projects. Insulation: There's a lot of negative views on Pink Fiberglass insulation. This link will prove why Pink is Green. However there are many other Green alternatives to fiberglass insulation including Spray-Foam Insulation and Natural Fiber Insulation . The key in picking the right insulation is to consider lifestyle, environmental impact, and the size of your home along with the heating/cooling system of your home (see below). KOHLER Plumbing Fixtures/Faucets : With some American households using upwards of 400 gallons of water per day, there are ample opportunities to save water using everyday fixtures and faucets. MBD prefers KOHLER's water saving products in our homes. Climate Master Geothermal Heating: Geothermal is the most cost efficient heating, cooling, and water heating system in the market today. This link not only explains how Geothermal heating systems work, but the our product's website (ClimateMaster) also explains the current tax credits, and much more information on Geothermal systems. Viesmann Solar: With oil prices and the situation with all non-renewable energy resources, Solar Energy is a perfect solution. Click on this PDF for a flier on the benefits of Viesmann Solar Energy. GreenGuard Housewrap: RainDrop’s innovative drainage channels keep water out of the wall system. Water will drain no matter how tightly cladding is nailed to the wall. RainDrop resists air and water infiltration, plus it breathes to allow moisture vapor to escape, and it stays UV-stable up to 4 months. RainDrop is an ideal secondary weather barrier for fiber cement, vinyl, foam-backed vinyl, and wood sidings. Radiant Heating:
